Authenticity
Water is an essential aspect of life that many take for granted. It is used everyday by students in their daily routine. It is easy not to notice the amount of water an individual uses each day for their daily needs such as teeth brushing, showering, and drinking. However, it is concerning to many that several communities in Canada, including some Indigenous reserves, do not have access to clean water to drink or bathe in. This is not only a problem in developing countries, this problem is right here in our own backyard.

Students will be shown statistics of Canadian communities that lack clean water as evidence for this problem. The unit has been designed to replicate an authentic issue that requires students to think like scientists solving a world problem. Students will collaborate in groups to demonstrate their critical thinking skills and problem solving skills. By inviting experts into the classroom, students will learn the basics of a water filtration system. This will provide students with a strong foundation of knowledge which will help them with the analysis of their own experiment. This interdisciplinary unit incorporates an authentic question as it raises student's awareness of privilege.
